Home Assistant vs SmartThings vs Apple Home: Which Wins in 2026?

We get this question every week: "Which platform should I build my smart home on?" After installing all three for Central Florida estates ranging from $2M residences to $20M+ compounds and active custom builds, here's the honest breakdown.

Quick answer: Home Assistant is the right choice for any estate over 4,000 sq ft or with security cameras — zero cloud dependency, unlimited automations, and support for virtually every device brand.

    • Apple Home: best for a smaller home that just needs lights, locks, and a thermostat to work simply
    • SmartThings: broadest device compatibility for non-technical users, but cloud-dependent — limited functionality without internet
    • Home Assistant: local control, works during an internet outage, no subscription, no vendor lock-in — the tradeoff is setup complexity, which is what a professional configuration solves

    Apple Home (HomeKit)

Wins on: Privacy, simplicity, family sharing, ecosystem polish. Loses on: Device support (huge brands still don't ship HomeKit), advanced automation, anything beyond "turn on lights." Verdict: Perfect for a couple in a smaller home who just want lights, locks, and a thermostat to work without thinking.

    SmartThings (Samsung)

Wins on: Massive device compatibility, decent app, Matter support. Loses on: Cloud dependency (no internet = limited functionality), automation limits, Samsung's product priorities shift constantly. Verdict: Good middle ground for renters or smaller homes who don't want to learn anything technical.

    Home Assistant

Wins on: Local control (zero cloud dependency), unlimited automations, supports literally every device, free, open source, future-proof. Loses on: Setup complexity (this is where we come in), requires a small server in the home. Verdict: The only correct answer for any home over 4,000 sq ft, any home with security cameras, any home where you don't want to depend on a startup staying in business.

Why we default to Home Assistant for estates

    Three reasons:

    1. It still works when the internet doesn't. Hurricane knocks out fiber? Locks, lights, climate, cameras keep functioning.
    2. It works with everything. Z-Wave locks, Zigbee bulbs, MQTT sensors, HomeKit devices, Alexa, Google — all on one dashboard.
    3. You own it. No subscription, no vendor pulling features, no being held hostage when a company gets acquired.

    The catch

Home Assistant is genuinely powerful and genuinely complex. The learning curve has killed more DIY projects than any other smart home platform. That's the whole reason Connected Estate exists — we configure it once, document it cleanly, and you get all the power without the YAML headaches.
